The tourist season has started in Saranda after a difficult waiting period. Activities that were exhibited on the main promenade of the city are expected to be present throughout the season.
“The southern edge of the country one of the most important tourism poles in the country will have this season a good influx of visitors that tour operators believe will be close to the figures of 2019. What seems to have changed somewhat this year is the geography of visitors. Ukrainian, Russian or Belarusian tourists will be absent while even visitors to neighboring countries with the war zone have reflected low desire to travel. The situation is similar with other Northern European countries where visitors are already being organized in small private groups avoiding operators and organized vacations. This is the case of Mias a tourist from the Netherlands traveling with her two friends. She recalls that 40 years ago when traveling through the territory of the former Yugoslavia, Albania was a mystery, a small country and isolated from the world. “Planning this trip took a long time and Mia says they did not know what to expect but discovered a place with a lot of potential.”– said the director of tourism Eva Mato
“It was a nice surprise for us. People are warm and friendly, find good food without much effort and there is a lot to see. “Maybe there are things that need to be done better but during the week we are exploring with my friends I have not noticed anything that really bothers me.” Said a visitor.
What is considered as a challenge this season will be the quality of services in relation to tourist flows. The departure of a large number of tourism workers during the pandemic as well as the seasonality of tourism on the coast seriously hit the labor market. This year, for the first time, foreign workers from the Philippines, other Asian countries, Turkey and the region will appear in the service.
“Saranda with an overnight accommodation capacity of about 35 thousand beds is still dominated by overnight tourists oriented towards cultural tourism. They arrive to visit Butrint and Gjirokastra while returning again in the evening to Corfu. Saranda was frequented in 2019, the best year for tourism by about 800 thousand visitors from more than 100 countries of the world where a significant weight was occupied by Russian and Polish tourists. This year, a record number of about 150 cruise ships are expected to reach the port of Saranda. “– said the tour operator Arben Çipa
