The woman who was pulled to death by the currents in front of her family to do the traditional Orthodox diving in icy waters has been made public today in photos by the media.
Anna Uskova, a 40-year-old mother of two, was seen in the tragic video of herself jumping with her foot into an open hole in the frozen Oredezh River near St. Petersburg, Russia, before disappearing tragically trapped by strong currents beneath the ice.
Her two children screamed in horror from the sudden driving as her husband, 50-year-old businessman Yury, was thrown into the water without being able to save him.
The lawyer was diving into the minced water to mark Orthodox Epiphany Day, a ritual that is performed annually by thousands of Russian believers.
The day of Christ’s Baptism ceremony is believed to have spiritual and healing qualities for people.
Some people enter the water alone while others in groups, to remember the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River.
When Anna made her unfortunate dive a hole was cut in the ice but unlike other similar cases, the hole had no other safety measures near her and the woman fell deep into the water before being tragically taken by the current.
Several divers from rescue teams failed to find the woman as searches reportedly continue with underwater drones to find her body.
The tragedy has caused in similar cases the believers and the organizers to be provided for increased measures to prevent accidents at the site of the dive and the state of the water under it.
