An underwater drone has been helping since Monday in the search and rescue operation to find a 28-year-old tourist from North Macedonia who went missing on Saturday evening after being swept away by sea currents while swimming with two friends in the beach of Possidi, Halidhiki.
The three tourists decided to dive into the sea during a holiday, but were unaware that the current that day was extremely strong.
So far, only two of them have been found, the first, 25-year-old Vasil Brezovski, was rescued by the Greek coastguard himself two hours later.
“The current took us to the sea. I saw my friend for an hour, but then I lost him. So I don’t know what happened to him. I hope it’s good, but we’ll see“, said Vasil Brezovski, the first rescued tourist.
The images when the rescue team brought Ivan Geogerfkin, 30 years old, the second survivor, to the shore, have made the rounds of the Greek media.
The young man was able to survive in the water by holding on to a ball he found while swimming for almost 19 hours.
Although the ball was running out of air, Ivan was still able to use it to breathe and stay afloat as he was pulled by the strong current.
While the ball in question was lost at sea by two children of a family vacationing on a beach on the island of Limnos, Ivan was found in the open sea off the coast of the northern Greek city of Katerini.
Despite his harrowing story of survival, the 30-year-old was in good health and authorities believe he survived because he is a particularly strong swimmer.
The search for the third missing person is continuing, but since so many hours have passed and the weather conditions are not favorable, the maritime authorities estimate that there is not much hope that he will be found alive.
