In an interview for the newspaper “Naftemporiki” on Saturday, where the main place was occupied by Greek-Turkish rhetoric and tensions, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias also referred to relations with Albania.
Asked if after the election of the new Albanian president, there could be rapid developments regarding the signing of the joint agreement for the establishment of the EEA with Albania in the Hague tribunal, he answered:
“As it is known, there is already a political agreement between Greece and Albania on the referral of the EEA border issue between the two countries to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which was reached during my visit to Tirana in October 2020.”
“The Prime Minister also played a key role in reaching this agreement, Mr. Rama told Dhendias” – adding that the submission of the joint agreement is a legal-technical part of this political agreement and “its drafting is entrusted to the competent services of both countries that are in direct communication ”.
“During my last visit to Tirana, about three weeks ago, we discussed with the Albanian side the possibilities and ways to promote this process. The aim is to be able to present this joint agreement to the International Court of Justice in The Hague as soon as possible, in order to close a case that has been pending for so many years, but also to give an example of clear to all countries in the region as a whole how disputes between states are resolved on the basis of International Law and in particular the Law of the Sea ”.
Dendias was also asked when the ratification of the memorandums of cooperation with Northern Macedonia is expected and he stressed that he sees a significant improvement in bilateral relations, that Greece looks forward to the full, stable and confident implementation of the spirit of the Prespa Agreement. , but as for the three memoranda in question, the government will bring them for ratification, when the national interest and the program of the Greek parliament allow.
