Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has called on Iran to end its “negative approach” to the region after Riyadh accused Tehran of helping Yemeni rebels carry out deadly attacks on his country.
However, the 86-year-old monarch has spoken in a softer tone towards the Islamic Republic, after calling on world leaders a year ago to take a “tough stance” on Tehran.
“We hope that Iran will change its policy and misbehavior in the region and be guided by dialogue and cooperation,” he said in a statement.
Riyadh and Tehran have been enemies for decades and take opposite sides in regional conflicts, including that in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia leads a military coalition against Iranian-backed Huthi rebels.
The two countries have been holding a series of talks since April, aimed at improving relations.
“We are monitoring the Iranian regime’s support for the Huthi terrorist militia, which is continuing its war in Yemen and is deteriorating the humanitarian situation.”
Yemen has been involved in the civil war since 2014.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed in what the United Nations has described as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, as over 80 percent of Yemen’s population depends on aid.
