A Russian soldier accused of killing an unarmed Ukrainian man has appeared in a Kiev court today, ahead of the first war crimes trial since the start of the war.
Vadim Shishimarin, 21, held a preliminary hearing, accused of killing a 62-year-old unarmed civilian.
According to Sky News, Shishimarin has confirmed that he is a Russian soldier, while he will face life imprisonment for war crimes and premeditated murder.
A statement from prosecutor ryna Venediktova’s office said the accused had been ordered by another soldier to carry out the murder after threatening to report it.
His lawyer Viktor Ovsyannikov has stated that the clarifications will be made finally with Shishimarin’s reaction, in another court hearing on May 18.
Russia said it had no information about the trial and has repeatedly denied any involvement in the war crimes.
