The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia and Bulgaria, Bujar Osmani and Teodora Gençovska, signed on Sunday in Sofia the protocol that foresees the procedures and dynamics of overcoming the differences between them, which are part of the French proposal.
“This paves the way for the Czech presidency,” said EU enlargement commissioner Oliver Varhely to hold the first intergovernmental conference for North Macedonia and Albania to open membership negotiations with the EU.
The Foreign Minister of North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, said that the protocol shows that a lot has been done and everyone involved has invested as much as possible to have projects, memoranda and documents that strengthen relations between the two countries.
“For us, it is a historic opportunity that after 17 years of candidate status, North Macedonia gets the opportunity to start negotiations with the EU tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, which begins the last phase of our membership in the EU”.he said.
The Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Teodora Gençovska, also said that the meeting was useful and that progress was made in all sectors.
Gençovska said that Bulgaria is the country that strongly supports the European integration of North Macedonia and Albania.
The signing of the protocol comes a day after the Assembly of North Macedonia approved the French proposal, which paves the way for the integration of Skopje in the EU.
After the approval, EU officials warned that negotiations for membership in the bloc for Skopje and Tirana will open next week.
