Six candidates remain in the running to replace UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the first round of voting, as Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi and former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt were eliminated.
The race is now led by Rishi Sunak, who resigned as finance minister, with 88 votes. He is followed by Penny Mordaunt with 67 votes and Liz Truss with 50 votes
Now there are only 6 candidates in the race. “I’ll be leaving soon with my head held high,” Johnson said in his penultimate Questions session in the House of Commons, following a spectacular cabinet collapse last week.
New rounds of voting will take place on Thursday and, if necessary, next week until just two candidates remain, with a successor to Johnson expected to be chosen by September 5.
Few of the contenders have a high public profile. Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak is the favorite and has the highest number of declared supporters, followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Trade Secretary Penny Mordaunt.
However, a new poll conducted by YouGov asked hundreds of Conservative Party members who they would be their number one choice for Prime Minister, and in every scenario Penny Mordaunt came out on top.
The poll also shows that the supposed favorite candidate Rishi Sunak unable to defeat the remaining contenders in the race.
