British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has defended himself today after widespread calls to resign, saying no one had warned him that the drink party in the prime minister’s garden broke the isolation rules.
“No one warned me he was against the rules,” the prime minister said, adding: “If I had been told I would have remembered.”
But his former aide Dominic Cummings says he warned Johnson in May, and now accuses him of lying to lawmakers about the story.
Asked if he would resign if he lied to lawmakers, Johnson said: “Let’s see what the report means.”
Senior administration employee Sue Gray is expected to publish a report on frequent evenings at the prime minister’s garden or other government departments during Covid’s isolation.
Mr. Cummings, who was still working as prime minister at the time of the infamous May 20, 2021 holiday, says the prime minister had refused his warnings.
Cummings says the idea of an assistant secretary’s advice did not impress Johnson.
Two other government officials told the BBC they remembered Cummings for advising the prime minister not to hold a drink meeting.
In response to the latest statement, Labor MP Angela Rayner said: “Boris Johnson knows he has come to the end of the road.
