June 11, 2021 was a historic date for Albania. Our country was accepted as a temporary member of the UN Security Council.
A year later, exactly on June 1, 2022, for 30 days Albania will hold the presidency of the Council.
In New York, Prime Minister Edi Rama and Foreign Minister Olta Xhacka will be in charge of the Security Council.
Another historic date for our country that in these 12 months as a member of the council has raised the voice of strong argument against Russian brutality in Ukraine.
Although a small country, Albania in the Council has shown determination alongside the US in leading the council with several resolutions on Ukraine.
Albania’s ambassador to the UN, Ferit Hoxha, shows the great responsibility and the privilege of our country taking over the presidency of the Security Council.
Olta Xhaçka, Albanian Foreign Minister, says that with the assumption of the presidency of the council, Albania will be at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia.
Albania became a member of the UN on December 14, 1955, and after 66 years of membership, was voted for the first time to be a member of the Security Council. This Council consists of 15 members, where the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China are 5 permanent members and the other 10 member countries have a two-year term.
