A woman believed to be “possessed” by evil spirits screamed and beat the church faithful until the priests managed to complete the exorcism ritual for her salvation.
The Exorcist ”was performed by monks in northeastern Italy.
The 26-year-old was reportedly hitting and attacking anyone who approached her, running around the church and climbing on furniture, attacking monks and insulting in various languages, including Latin.
Church officials told police officers to wait outside until the end of the prayer ritual, in which another priest assisted in the live video link.
Padre Carlo Rossato said of the event: “It was a pure case of possession, she was screaming, cursing and talking loudly, the presence of the devil was evident.
“The young girl had gone to an exorcist in Verona before, but on Sunday her parents brought her here, perhaps to try once again to recover from the evil she had been suffering from for a long time.”
After the efforts of the priests the girl had fallen into a deep sleep in the church of St. Mary of Monte Berico in Vincenza.
Exorcist priests are specially qualified for the procedure according to canonical laws.
Priests are advised to call the exorcist even when they hear disturbing stories of believers.
But cases of abuse such as threats, rape or illegal imprisonment by healers have also been reported for the procedure.
In one incident in Britain, police were called when a parent said his child had been pushed down the stairs “by a ghost or ghost” and the priest had been called in for an exorcism.
