The contraction of the population in the country does not stop. Instat data show that the population has dropped to 2.79 million inhabitants, over 36 thousand less than a year ago further deteriorating the country’s demographic indicators.
Economic impossibilities and the desire for a better life have caused over 42 thousand people to leave the country last year, almost twice as much as in 2020, a very worrying figure for Albania, which is officially in a demographic crisis.
The decrease in fertility and the increase in the number of lives lost, mainly due to the pandemic, made the natural increase last year to be negative with 3,200 more deaths than births. In total, over 30 thousand people lost their lives last year.
However, migratory movements within the country have also increased, as the population of rural areas is increasingly approaching urban centers, such as Tirana, Durres and Fieri, which hold the largest share of the country’s population, over half of it.
This is due to the greater opportunities that these regions offer both in terms of employment and services, making them also hold the largest share in the country’s economy.
During 2021, statistics show that out of 12 counties only one of them has registered population growth and is exactly the capital, while the other 11 counties the population has marked shrinkage. The largest decrease in the number of inhabitants was registered in the regions of Gjirokastra, Berat and Dibra.
In addition to the contraction, the population of Albania is aging rapidly, as the average age has reached 38.2 years, from 37.6 years old.
