Bulgaria’s population has shrunk by 11.5 per cent in the last decade, according to preliminary census data.
The population has dropped by more than 844,000 people, from 7.3 million to 6.5 million, according to the National Institute of Statistics.
Experts have said that these figures are a result of declining birth rates, high mortality rates, an aging population and migration from this EU country.
Only in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, has there been an increase in population.
The largest decrease was recorded in the northwestern provinces of Vidin and Montana.
The National Institute of Statistics expects the final census data to be published by the end of 2022.
The last census in this state was conducted in 2011.
