German police have said a gunman wounded several people in a university hall in the southwestern city of Heidelberg.
Police said in a statement that the attacker was dead, but did not provide details on how this happened and did not specify how many people were injured in the attack and how they are.
The German news agency, dpa, and the other daily, Bild, have said the attacker killed himself.
Security officials said the first signs indicate that the attacker had no political or religious motives.
Police said the weapon used in the attack was a long-barreled firearm.
Heidelberg University is the oldest university in Germany.
It was founded in 1386.
The city has about 160,000 inhabitants.
