Authorities in Montenegro are facing a rapid increase in cases of coronavirus infection, following the reporting of the first cases of the Omicron variant of this virus.
On January 3 alone, authorities reported 12,507 new cases of coronavirus.
Seven days ago, the daily number of infected was 3,310.
The Montenegrin Institute of Public Health has said that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus – which was identified 18 days ago in this country – is dominant and is spreading faster than other variants.
According to statistics, the number of people infected on January 3, compared to two weeks ago, has increased by almost 450 percent.
The number of victims has decreased by 11 percent.
“Most of the young patients are in the age group of 20 to 40 years,” the institute said in a statement.
A total of 169 patients have been hospitalized across the state while 29 of them – infected with coronavirus – are in danger of death.
According to authorities, 44 per cent of the Montenegrin population has been vaccinated with two doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
Montenegro has a population of 620,000.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, about 175,000 cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in this state.
Of these, 2,420 people have died.
