The UK and Spain are reporting an increase in the number of refugees landing on their shores by boat. The death toll has also risen.
According to the UK Home Office in 2021 more than 28,300 people illegally arrived on the British shores through the English Channel, three times more than in 2020, reports DW. The daily record was on November 11 with 1185 people. On November 24, 27 people died as their overcrowded boat sank.
The British government wants to increase penalties for smugglers of human beings and strengthen asylum legislation. A draft law stipulates that illegal entry should be considered a criminal offense and should be sanctioned with penalties, which creates a disadvantage for persons who have entered the country when applying for asylum.
Increase in the number of refugees in Spain as well
Spanish authorities have also reported that the number of refugees arriving by boat has doubled. In 2021, more than 4,400 migrants died trying to reach Spain by sea, writes the Spanish aid organization “Caminando Fronteras” in its annual report.
Doubling of deaths compared to 2020
The death toll has doubled compared to 2020, when 2,170 migrants died, the aid organization said. There have never been as many deaths as in 2021. On the road from West Africa to the Canary Islands alone, 4,016 people have died, according to the Caminando Fronteras report.
The figures for the Spanish organization are about three and a half times higher than for the United Nations High Commissioner for Migration (IOM). Asked about these differences, “Caminando Fronteras” said that the activists of the organization had direct contacts with the survivors and with the families of immigrants in Africa./DW
