The number of bicycle users in Tirana has increased significantly, especially in recent years when the world has faced a pandemic, or rising oil prices due to the war in Ukraine.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, visited the newest bicycle point in Tirana, “Bike Point”, where he said that this is the best period to understand the importance of using wheelbarrows.
“The fact that the number of bicycles sold or cleared has tripled is very good news. It means that we have not given up on this challenge for something we can not control, but we have embraced an opportunity. So I look forward to seeing not only the spread of such shops throughout the neighborhoods, but also the spread of the culture that follows with the addition of the bicycle network. “This year we will continue to complete what is called the ‘minimum bicycle network’, for which we are also working with GIZ and KFW, two German specialized urban development agencies,” said Veliaj.
The mayor affirmed that Tirana pays special attention to bicycle users and this is shown by the added lanes. According to Veliaj, car drivers are also aware and respect the city’s cyclists.
“Something very good that has happened is the awareness of drivers. If before he who had a car to bully, because he felt the king of the road, today he has realized that he must share the road as a space with others. Taxes are paid by both those who use bicycles and those who walk. If we are all co-shareholders of investments in the city, it means that we will be co-shareholders and co-users of road space. I heard people say: at “Myslym Shyri” our car lane was blocked. I tell you: remember a little, did the car ever pass there? In fact, cars were parked for 16 hours on the road, so it was not a crossing lane. “So were” Rruga e Kavajës “and” Zogu i Parë “, said Veliaj.
He added that short distances in Tirana, which require less than 15 minutes, can be done very well on foot or by bike. “A driver should be happy every time he sees someone on a bicycle, because it means there is one less car on the road. Of course, for some people the car is necessary to cover some distances, but in conditions when Tirana has a radius of 3-4 kilometers, so about 15 minutes from wherever you can go, using the bike makes sense, it is more economical, healthier and certainly a way to respond to this crisis that is happening, which we can not control. But we can control the way we behave. We can control our habits, our lifestyle. I wish the trend of bicycle use continues. In the days with traffic or in the days of an oil crisis, we must say let’s change the habit, it is better to use the bicycle or walk, especially in a place like ours, where we have 300 days of sunshine “, stressed Veliaj.
