The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, together with the Minister of Agriculture, Frida Krifca and the Ambassador of Israel to Albania, Noah Gal Gendler, inspected the progress of the works for the food market in Farka, which covers an area of 5ha and will serve as an open retail market, but also as a large wholesale market, equipped with refrigeration equipment and special environments for preserving the quality of products.
Veliaj said that this provides a solution to the monopoly situation created in the food market, and traders from all areas around Tirana can sell their products at the prices they determine themselves. Also, consumers buy products at cheaper prices and better quality. “For a very long time, even longer than necessary, we had a monopoly in the wholesale market, where the biggest profit was neither the producer nor the consumer, but the middleman – that is, the one who owned the market in Kashar , who as a middleman was earning without doing any big work. Meanwhile, we want the farmer to win, making the market entry fee almost negligible, but also the consumer, who will buy the products at a lower price. In this way, we eliminate the role of the middleman, who invoiced every box and every kilogram that enters the wholesale market”, said Veliaj.
According to him, the new market, which is a joint investment between the Municipality of Tirana and the Ministry of Agriculture, will be open every weekend for citizens who want to make supplies for the week. “On the big platforms, the majority market will work, while in the central part – according to the model we have seen in Verona and Bologna, – the minority market will work, or as it is called the peasant market, which will be open mainly in weekend. Every citizen can come, park the car and stock up for the week. Whereas, those who have a restaurant or a family business, have the opportunity to perform both services, both majority and minority,” explained Veliaj.
The mayor said that this is a solution for the entire valley of Erzen, starting from Krraba, Petrela, the area of Farka and the surrounding villages, with Iba, Mullet, Lundra, then continuing in the direction of Baldushku, Vaqarri and Ndroqi.
The Minister of Agriculture, Frida Krifca, said that this market will be an example and a meeting point for farmers, processors and traders with the consumer. “It is very important, especially in the period we are going through with the price crisis, that we offer farmers all the spaces where they can sell their products at lower prices, so that the final consumer can also buy them with lower prices. At the same time, it is important to ensure food security for our farmers. I am very happy that this market will be an example and a meeting point of farmers, processors, agro-processors, traders, but also of all actors who sell agricultural inputs, of those who advise how these agricultural inputs should be used , so that through this interaction, we have the opportunity to have not only cheaper and competitive products, but more production, as required by today’s time, as well as a food guarantee for our consumers,” said Krifca.
Israel’s ambassador to Albania, Noah Gal Gendler emphasized the fact of the worldwide food crisis, saying that such markets help to solve such challenges. “Markets are a challenge all over the world, as we lose a large amount of food along the chain. We need to solve food security, as it is critical these days, not only in Albania, but in the whole world. It’s a big challenge, so this is a very good job,” stated Ambassador Gendler.
