The Netherlands has banned 14 Russian-owned superyachts, frozen 516m euros in assets and blocked 155m euros in transactions as part of sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, according to Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra.
In a letter to the Dutch Parliament, Hoekstra explained that 12 yachts were currently under construction at five shipyards in the Netherlands for the so-called “last beneficiary owners” of Russia.
While some of the owners are not on the European sanctions list, “due to current export measures, these vessels are not allowed to be delivered at the moment,” he said, adding that the ownership structures of these yachts are under investigation.
Hoekstra said that two yachts were placed under strict customs supervision and “the connection of one of these yachts with a person mentioned in the lists of European sanctions is being investigated”, CNN reports.
Since the imposition of the first sanctions, “almost 30,000 containers in transit to Russia / Belarus have been stopped” in the Port of Rotterdam, and they were investigated to “determine whether they fall under the sanctions measures”.
From these investigations about 5,500 containers were kept under suspicion that they contained luxury goods with a value of 300 euros per item. “If so, these goods may not be sent to Russia / Belarus. “said Hoekstra.
Dutch customs officials have also carried out 3,300 checks on cargo shipments.
