The young people of Tirana will be offered the same benefits as their peers in Europe. The Municipality of Tirana started distributing the European Youth Charter for high school and university students, which is recognized in 36 European countries.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj and the Minister of Youth and Children, Bora Muzhaqi, distributed the first cards, which offer a series of opportunities for Albanian students.
Veliaj said that so far, thanks to the Student Card and agreements with businesses in Albania, young people benefit from services at reduced prices in 2000 entities.
“To date, two thousand enterprises have responded to us and over 75% of Tirana students have a Student Card. Expenses do not end, but at the moment when we can save 5, 10, 15, or 20%, starting from canteens, electronic devices, school ones, etc., it is something that helps, especially in these times when we all need to be a little more frugal. “But with the European Youth Charter that we distribute today, we have gone beyond the borders of Albania”, he said.
This card is a tool that empowers young people, offering discounts in 36 European countries in the sectors: culture, accommodation, travel, entertainment, training and studies, health sector, banking sector, tourism, telecommunications and internet, sports, shopping, etc. In total there are about 7 million cardholders and over 60,000 businesses that offer discounts in Europe, while in Tirana, thanks to the Youth Agency, 2000 Student Card services, will also offer discounts for European Youth Card holders during 2022.
The Mayor underlined that the distribution of the European Charter for young people will continue in other cities of Albania.
“When you have to give a solution to something, you do not find excuses why it is not done. We did the Student Card since no one else was taking over. Thanks to the help of the Government and the Prime Minister, we are doing the same in other municipalities. The biggest compliment is not the applause, but the fact that the European Youth Charter recognizes today the partnership with Tirana and they say: ‘This miracle that they did in such a short time, gathering so many services, we will have to take it to another level’ . “I am glad today that young people receive the Student Card that is recognized in the European Union”, he stressed.
Also, Veliaj invited young men and women to become part of the activities that are taking place in Tirana, as the European Capital of Youth 2022. “We had over 300 activities, more than 3-4 per day. Who organizes an activity also shows a leadership ability, shows that he knows how to gather people together, to impose, to have a sense of discipline, to organize, so call it a first general test to become the next mayor, or future ministers. I would like to see how many of you in schools, gymnasiums, universities, organize activities for the Year of Youth “, said Veliaj.
The second function of the European Youth Charter is to generate free information through its unique code (electronic password and username) for: scholarships in Europe, student mobility, training programs, exchange, workshops, international competitions, volunteer work, etc. This updated information is made possible by memberships in the European Youth Information and Conculting Agency in Luxembourg, the European Youth Card Association in Brussels and the European Solidarity Corps program.
