On the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj hosted an iftar dinner for Muslim believers, representatives of religious communities, diplomats, MPs and members of the Municipal Council.
In his speech on this occasion, Veliaj said that this month is a reminder of how important union is.
“As the Qur’an says, even the Prophet Muhammad, union is mercy, and division is punishment for man. Today we are united and perhaps more united than ever, but it has not always been so. Therefore, we should be even more grateful for the mercy he has won over punishment. Two million Albanians were denied the right to believe and to profess their faith. Those who dared to observe Ramadan were once threatened, something we consider so obvious today, but until yesterday so impossible. Here we are today, in a completely different time, when we have removed a great evil with a great good. We have left a regime for a life in democracy, a life in freedom. We are together, proving exactly the presence of good and cleansing from evil “, said Veliaj.
He appealed for more solidarity with each other and stressed that the earthquake and pandemic taught us the importance of being together.
“For a long time, as the mayor of this fantastic city I needed so much the great unification of our city, I noticed the citizens trying to move forward from great and very serious obstacles, which made it difficult for us to walk and progress. . Today we are united in a dinner, where the union identifies us both outside the iftar halls, and outside the halls where the ceremonial dinners are served. What would we have done in this city if we were not together? What would have happened to those affected by the earthquake if there had been no solidarity between us? What would happen to the schools that had to be done from scratch, as students had nowhere to come together to listen to the teacher? “What would we have done at the height of the pandemic if we had not opened our eyes to the extraordinary solidarity of the white T-shirts?” He said.
The Mayor said that Tirana has chosen to be together to support those who left the war in Ukraine. He added that freedom and unity should never be taken for granted, but should be worked out daily to preserve them.
“How could we feel at peace with ourselves, even with God, if we had not shown solidarity against the great evil that has descended not far from us, in Ukraine?” But is 1200 km from here a reason to consider remote a need for solidarity? We have chosen to be with those we are sheltering these days, even with the victims of war, and to offer every support, just as we were given support during both the earthquake and the pandemic. We, in this city, have left the past behind, we have left the division behind, and we have put them in a museum so that we do not forget them, but by no means do we take for granted the freedom and unity we have today. “Faith and religion exist everywhere in this society, even to teach people how to overcome evil”, underlined Veliaj.
