The fiercest duel among the British conservatives for the post of prime minister of the country, left vacant by the resignation of Boris Johnson, is between the two main contenders, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss.
Their last televised showdown, however, was canceled because the moderator suddenly fainted on air in the middle of the discussion.
The Sun and TalkTV debate, hosted by journalist Kate McCann, was abruptly halted halfway through after the incident happened to her. TalkTV clarified that McCann was “fine” but the channel had been given medical advice not to continue. Before it stopped, the last televised debate between the two candidates had covered taxes, the state of the health care system and the rising cost of living.
Earlier, Truss, who has remained loyal to Johnson, avoided directly answering the question of whether she would give him a role in her government. She doesn’t think this is a current issue. Sunaku, whose resignation was the very thing that spelled Johnson’s end, answers with a resounding no. In their first meeting, Sunak’s performance failed to start the turnaround he needs against poll favourites, Truss. In the coming weeks, both candidates will appear again in debates and in front of party members. But the first ballots will be sent out in a few days.
