The key Ukrainian port city of Mariupol is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe, and the city’s mayor, Vadym Boichenko, is calling for a complete evacuation of the population. He added that about 160,000 civilians have been stranded in the city without electricity.
Boichenko said 26 buses are waiting to evacuate civilians but the Russian military does not give them permission to cross. Meanwhile, Russian forces have surrounded the city without providing it with food, medicine or water supplies.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on the other hand, has stated that it is unable to provide assistance to Mariupol, as it seeks guarantees from Ukraine and Russia that its passage to Mariupol is safe.
Russia continues to deny targeting civilians and blames Ukraine for its failure to build safe corridors for stranded civilians.
