Police have made a spectacular drug seizure in Niger, seizing 200kg of cocaine in the official truck of a local mayor.
Both the mayor and his driver, who were inside the vehicle at the time of the action, were arrested after finding 199 “bricks” of cocaine, which are estimated to be worth about $ 8.7 million.
The couple were stopped Sunday at a crossroads in the north of the African country, on the road leading to the trade point in the Agadez desert, police authorities said.
A statement from the national anti-drug office in Niger confirmed that the seizure was a record for the area, but gave no further details.
West Africa has become an important transit route for Latin American drugs to Europe.
In October in Senegal more than two tonnes of pure cocoa were seized from a ship in its port.
A similar mass of cocaine was seized in the summer and by authorities in the Gambia, in a shipment from Ecuador.
