A man and a woman in the US had agreed to kill 3 children and themselves in December 2019, as they believed the end of the world was approaching, it was said yesterday at the trial of the family father, the only survivor of the gruesome event.
Prosecutors said the crime was committed by 46-year-old Anthony Todt, after a pact was made with his wife over a suicide-murder at their home in Florida, USA, with the intention of “crossing over”, from the apocalypse expected from a moment to next.
“Everyone needs to die to cross over, because the apocalypse is coming,” said prosecutor Danielle Pinnell, formulating the defendant’s reasoning in Osceola County court.
Todt has pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder and one count of cruelty to animals, including the murder of 42-year-old wife Megan Todt and their children Alek, 13, Tyler, 11, and Zoe, 4. The Breezy family dog was also killed.
The victims were drugged with sedatives, strangled and stabbed, and then left in their two-week home in Celebration, Florida.
They were wrapped in blankets, and the coroner said everyone had stab wounds, except the 4-year-old who had drowned.
Officers who testified said Todt had attempted suicide with an overdose of tranquilizers.
After the children were killed, Pinnell said his wife Megan had shot himself in the abdomen but failed to commit suicide, which was later completed by Todt.
Six months after the murders Todt claimed his wife was responsible for the macabre crime after writing in a letter that he had drugged the children with a cake mixed with the strong sedative Benadryl.
The trial continues.
