The employee, identified by family members as Esfandani, was putting meat out of the food window when two lions managed to open their cage, killed it, and roamed around the Iranian zoo for several hours.
The 40-year-old employee lost his life as a result of injuries before the two big cats were caught, local media reported yesterday.
The Iranian news agency Irna, said Lukanesha had managed to raise the iron lever that opened the door of the isolated separation of dangerous animals.
The lioness has been at the zoo for several years. After opening the door she had attacked the employee who was bringing food to the cats, a garden official told the local IRIB network.
He added that the two animals had managed to get out of their cage at the Arak Zoo, 150km southwest of the capital Tehran.
“Immediately after the incident, security forces took control of the zoo by catching the released lions,” said Amir Hadi, the province’s governor.
