Jupiter is a gentle and loving lion from Colombia who became famous while living in Refúgio Villa Lorena, which is one of the most exemplary shelters for abused animals.
Ana Julia Torres has so far cared for nine Bengali tigers, jaguars, cougar, a crocodile, a bear with glasses and even an ostrich.
In the center lives a chimpanzee named Jocko, various monkeys and hundreds of colorful birds.
Ana Julia says their only common denominator is that they were abused by their previous owners.
“They are soft, some have lost limbs, are blind or unable to focus,” she said.
“I myself have two human children, and the other children are about 800 center animals – some with claws, some with lots of stuffed animals, but all wonderful,” says Torres.
Among about 800 shelter animals, Anna’s favorite is the lion Jupiter.
She saved Jupiter from the circus, where he was often abused in his performances, and his claws were cut off.
Consequently Jupiter lost faith in humans and created a phobia from contact with them.
But when he came under the care of Anna Julia, his phobia started to change.
The lion was later transferred to the Monteriaia City Zoo because officials took it from Annas’s care due to lack of documentation.
Jupiter started losing weight at the zoo and got sick.
In order to save his life, Ana Julia managed to transfer him to an area closer to her where she received the care she needed.
He settled in the Cali Zoo where doctors worked tirelessly to care for him.
But they later determined that the lion was tragically suffering from liver cancer, and spent the last days next to his Ana Julias.
Jupiter lost the battle with cancer and passed away in 2020, but Ana Julia says the memory of the beloved lion lives on.
