A Serbian judge has ordered organized crime boss Darko Saric to remain in custody for a month, overturning a house arrest decision.
The judge said the move was made out of fear that Saric could try to leave the country or attempt to manipulate the evidence, pending a retrial.
On April 16, a Serbian judge said during the pre-trial hearing that Saric “could hide or run away and could become inaccessible to judicial authorities” as he waited for further court proceedings.
Saric is accused of organizing a group for drug smuggling and money laundering.
He was sentenced in 2018 to 15 years in prison for organizing the group. But the Supreme Court ruling in June 2021 allowed Saric to be released from prison and sent to house arrest, after it was found that there had been irregularities during the court proceedings in his case.
The criminal organization, led by Saric, has been accused of smuggling almost six tonnes of cocaine from South America to Europe in 2008 and 2009.
The Supreme Court in its decision did not question the evidence against Saric, based on which he was convicted in the initial trial, but the crime boss has said he is innocent.REL
