The world’s largest hospital ship ‘Global Mercy’, has made the first African stop at the port of Dakar in Senegal, where it will stay four weeks for training locals.
The 174-meter-long giant ship with 12 decks will stay in the Senegalese capital until the end of June to cure the poorest.
The director of the hospital, Gert van de Veerdhof, said that the time had come for the hospital ship to make its debut in Africa.
“With its length of 174 meters, 6 operating rooms, 200 hospital beds, 2 dental clinics and training laboratories, this is a hospital of the last word”, he eats.
Senegalese President Macky Sall thanked the hospital ship officials for the services they will provide to Senegalese citizens and for the training of local medical staff.
“I want to thank Don Stephens and the staff of Mercy Ships for promoting safe surgery in Africa, a recognition they have had since the 1990s,” the president said.
The initiative was created by futuristic millionaire Don Stephens, who founded ‘Mercy Ships’ in 1978 with the purchase of the Anastasis ship, where he lived with his family for ten years.
Matar, the father of a patient treated on the hospital ship said the son had been operated on there by doctors who were willing to treat him.
“When I heard that Mercy Ships was coming to Dakar, I decided to bring my son who was suffering from a strange disease.”
“They promised me they would cure him or take him abroad if necessary, but as you can see everything went well,” he said.
