British auction house Sotheby’s has auctioned off the world’s largest cut black diamond.
The 555.55 carat black diamond called “Enigma”, which has started to be exhibited at Sotheby’s in London, will be auctioned online on February 3-9.
The black diamond, which is thought to have formed when a gemstone asteroid collided with Earth 2.6 to 3.8 billion years ago, and which includes osbornite, a mineral found in meteorites, will find the owner of his new on February 10th.
The Enigma, weighing 800 carats in raw form when purchased by the current owner in the 1990s, took its final form after three years of processing. Cut in the shape of a palm tree inspired by the Middle East, Enigma is expected to find buyers for around milionë 3-5 million.
Speaking to AA, Nikita Binani, jewelry specialist at Sotheby’s, expressed satisfaction with the offer of a rare and eye-catching diamond.
Binani noted that the Enigma was ranked as the largest black natural colored diamond in the world by the American Institute of Precious Stones (GIA) and entered the Guinness Book of Records as “the largest cut diamond in the world” in in 2006.
Stressing that Enigma is one of the strongest diamonds in existence, Binani stated that cryptocurrencies can also be used in the auction.
