The Tennis Federation of Australia said it would consider revoking the visa of Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic following the end of the Australian Open.
The announcement comes two days after Djokovic was deported from Australia after losing a case in court over his visa cancellation.
The Australian Open, which Djokovic has won nine times, started on Monday. Three judges, on Sunday, January 16, said they would uphold the decision to cancel the tennis player’s visa, and he was subsequently deported from the state.
Djokovic had received a medical exemption from the Australian Tennis Federation and the state of Victoria, which allowed him to circumvent coronavirus vaccination rules. He based this exception on the fact that he had been infected with COVID-19 last month.
But border officials denied the medical exemption and revoked the tennis player’s visa upon arrival in Australia. The decision was overturned by a judge, but authorities later revoked Djokovic’s visa again and deported him.
“There are always lessons to be learned and we will look at all aspects of our preparations and the implementation of our plan, as we do every year. “This process always starts after the new Australian Open champions are announced,” the federation said in a statement.
The statement also said that the organizers of the Australian Open tournament have been working with the federal and state governments for a year in order for this tournament to be held during the pandemic.
