European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday promised that the EU would “weaken Russia’s economic base and its capacity to modernize” following the Kremlin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
“We will freeze Russian assets in the European Union and ban Russian banks from accessing European financial markets“Von Der Leyen told reporters.
“We condemn such a barbaric attack and the cynical arguments being used to justify it”.
She stressed that sanctions against Russia will be tougher, more massive and more strategic.
According to her, these sanctions are intended to cause serious damage to the Kremlin, as well as to prevent Russia from financing their military operations.
“We are aware that millions of Russians do not want war“, She said.
“We will not allow President Vladimir Putin to replace the rule of law with the rule of force,” said Voden der Leyen.
She stressed that Ukraine will prevail.
Speaking with Von der Leyen, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said the 27-member bloc’s punitive measures against Russia were “the toughest sanctions package ever implemented”.
