Bargains built on illegal grounds have become “fashionable” recently, but bartering with cemetery land was not heard of until recently.
Several months of investigations by the state police revealed a few days ago the scandal in the Tufina cemetery, where citizens bought places for graves against the payment they made to the employees.
Journalist Anila Hoxha has provided for “Top Channel” some of the interceptions of the people who were dealing with the sale of places for graves.
In the following statement, it is stated that Raimonda Shino, acting as the general director of the Tirana Municipality Funeral Service Agency, has stated that a family grave, of the Gjonaj family, should be demolished as it was found to be illegal.
On the other hand, the Gjonaj family has stated that the grave was bought with the value of 2 million old lek during the pandemic when the head of the family also died and it is not illegal.
“Given the fact that she is an engineer, from the images in the photo I can see that this building is being expanded and from the Tufina administration, written notices should have been sent to the directorate for this building to be demolished. Inspection of the scene with a criminal expert where the illegal construction of a family grave is described. The statement of Fatjon Gjonaj, he is a student, the child of the late Prend Gjonaj, where he says that his father Prend Gjonaj died on 01.11.2020, as a result of the disease of Covid-19. After his death, he was buried in an individual grave in a plot located on the right side of the Tufina cemetery and not in the family grave in question, which is ours as a grave site. The family tomb was bought by them at the time when my father passed away, as far as he remembers, with the value of 200,000 new lek.
They did not make any payment with 200,000 new lek, they did not make any payment with an invoice to the state for the purchase of this grave site, but they bought this site in good faith from some persons whose names and identity are not known. At the time it was purchased, it was built only with walls without a roof, in a smaller area than it is currently, but on the eastern side of this grave they put 2 concrete columns, in June 2022 they some employees were sent to the Tufina cemetery, where they carried out construction works by joining the existing family grave with a concrete wall to the 2 columns above, enlarging the surface of this object.
After the construction of these additional walls, and more specifically on the first day of July 2022, we have started to carry out work to cover this tomb with a roof by placing some wooden rails on its walls. For carrying out the works in this grave during the month of June 2022, they did not receive any written permission from the Tufina cemetery, these works were carried out almost on different days throughout the month of June 2022, little by little because they did not have the financial opportunity to finish faster.”
