The insect Diabrotica vergitera has damaged a large percentage of corn in the field of Maliqi.
Farmers inform that due to this insect infection, the expected production will be many times lower than a year ago. In order to save as much production as possible, the farmers of this field, including potential farmers, have started additional treatments with different pesticides, but according to them, at a stage like this where corn is located, it is very difficult to disinfect such large areas.
Festim Kupe and Yllson Veriu are two of the potential farmers of the Maliqi field who together planted 120 hectares of corn. According to them, so far more than 50% of the production is damaged, but the damage can be greater if the treatments are not carried out by all farmers at the same time.
Both of them seek the help of the ministry for intervention from the air since the infected surfaces are very large.
The Mayor of Maliqi, Gëzim Topçiu, asks the Ministry of Agriculture to disinfect the lands before planting agricultural crops, while excluding the possibility of intervention from the air to disinfect the surfaces planted with corn.
More than 3000 hectares of corn have been planted in the municipality of Maliqi alone. Most of this surface is infected.
