Even a limited conflict in Ukraine would bring tens of thousands of refugees to Slovakia, Defense Minister Jaroslav Naď (OĽaNO) said after a meeting of the National Security Council.
If the situation in Ukraine escalates and the worst-case scenario becomes a reality, Prague, which has offered to send troops to the Slovak-Ukrainian border, is preparing for such a situation.
Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korczok that the situation is serious, conflict is inevitable and the EU and the US will not be able to accept some requests coming from Moscow. The Slovak government has already prepared three strategic documents. One of them is the so-called migration plan. Although not currently public, Naď said all Ukrainians arriving in the country will receive refugee status.
The United States and the European Union have a cautious approach to Russia’s intentions following the 2014 invasion of Crimea and the support that Moscow has given to separatists in the fight against government forces in eastern Ukraine. The US and the EU have warned of harsh responses if Russia attacks again.
Moscow denies any plans to invade, but in the meantime continues to gather troops at the border.
