In incredible video released today, a helicopter pilot ‘played with death’ as his craft suddenly nose-dived into the rocks of a lighthouse in French waters, before miraculously regaining altitude to avoid death.
The helicopter was flying towards the Vielle Lighthouse which is undergoing renovations, about 800 meters in the waters west of Pointe du Raz in the Finistère region.
Video of the moment shows the clear day as the helicopter approaches the structure to retrieve equipment from it.
But in dramatic action-movie-like footage, the plane noses down to rocky ground and looks set to crash.
A plume of smoke emerges from the helicopter’s engines but again the vehicle manages to regain control by gaining altitude.
The pilot was reported to be shaken but safe, while in a report from the ground the France Bleu network said that an employee on the ground had been hit by an equipment crate.
The cause of the malfunction is not yet known, but experts say the vehicle may have undergone a sudden change in speed that caused it to lose balance.
The dramatic footage has gone viral on the web especially on a relatively quiet day of news from the tumultuous developments.
French officials said investigations are continuing.
