The director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, warned on Thursday that the conflict in Ukraine would have consequences for the global economic recovery.
Following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Georgieva said she was “deeply concerned” about the impact these military actions could have on the Ukrainian people and that the continuation of the fighting “increases the economic risks to the region and the world.”
The IMF said it was continuing to assess the economic impact, but would be “ready to assist member states if needed”.
The IMF is in the process of sending $ 2.2 billion in aid to Ukraine. Georgieva said the IMF could also provide assistance to other countries affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
In the early hours of the morning of February 24, Russia announced that it had launched a “military operation” to “demilitarize” Ukraine.
The United States, the European Union and countries around the world have condemned Russia’s military action against Ukraine and vowed to impose tough sanctions on Moscow.
