Tuesday’s vote is a direct counterpoint to the Supreme Court, which, in ruling to end constitutional protections for abortion, signaled that other rights enjoyed by Americans may be at risk.
The so-called Respect for Marriage Act easily passed the House of Representatives, but it is likely to be blocked in the Senate, due to opposition from the vast majority of Republicans.
A total of 47 Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the bill in the House of Representatives.
“This is a personal matter for me“, said Democratic lawmaker Mondaire Jones, who is one of the lawmakers who has openly admitted to being gay.
“Imagine telling the next generation of Americans, my generation, that you no longer have the right to marry. Congress cannot allow this to happen“, he said.
This is one of several bills, including one guaranteeing access to abortion procedures, that Democrats have proposed to challenge the decisions of the Supreme Court’s conservative majority. Another bill, one that guarantees access to contraceptive services, is expected to be voted on this week.
The Biden administration released a statement in support of the marriage bill.
Polls show that most Americans are in favor of preserving a person’s right to marry whomever they want, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity./VOA
