The Bulgarian government of Prime Minister Kiril Petkov has fallen today, losing the motion of confidence in the Bulgarian parliament with 123 votes in favor, 116 against and no abstentions.
The overthrow of the government also hinders the decision to lift the veto on Northern Macedonia.
Recall that the vote of confidence was submitted by GERB. The argument of the largest opposition group was “Government failure in the country’s financial policies.”
The president should start consultations with the parties in the National Assembly. Then follows the presentation of the first investigative mandate before the largest political force “We continue the change”. They have seven days to gather the majority.
If the mandate is returned, the head of state still does not have a deadline for consultations. Even the second party to take office, in this case GERB, will have seven days. If they return the mandate, President Radev will have 7 days to elect a third party to attempt to form a cabinet.
When the opportunities are exhausted, a caretaker government is appointed and until then, the resigning government will run the country.
Based on the procedures, experts estimate that early elections may take place soon in August, but due to the holiday season, voting is expected to take place in September or October.
Bulgaria’s 99th government with Prime Minister Kiril Petkov elected on December 13, 2021. Prior to its formation, the country went to the polls three times, a record in Bulgaria’s history.
A major obstacle was the blockade of talks between northern Macedonia and the European Union, which Sofia had vetoed for its non-compliance with the 2017 Neighborhood Agreement, hate speech, destruction of Bulgarian cultural monuments and falsification of Bulgarian history.
