A giant fossil of an ichthyosaur has been discovered in the UK.
Ten feet tall, with a skull weighing a ton, these are the size of the fossil of a marine reptile, the ichthyosaur, recently found by British researchers in a reservoir in the East Midlands.
This is the largest and most complete fossil of its kind ever discovered in the UK, British media reported.
It was discovered during the routine emptying of part of the Rutland Reservoir and is about 180 million years old. “It is a very significant discovery, both nationally and internationally, but also of great importance to the people of Rutland and the surrounding area,” said Dr. Mark Evans, researcher at the British Antarctic Survey.
Ichthyosaur fossils have been discovered in England since the early 19th century on the Dorset coast in the Channel Channel.
