An abandoned ship has been found floating off the coast of Thailand, with no crew members on board.
The mysterious vessel was spotted by employees of oil plants in the Gulf of Thailand on January 6 and had no identification documents inside.
The 90-meter-long tanker bore the name ‘Jin Shui Yuan 2’ in Chinese letters but its origin or destination is still unknown.
After the discovery the ship subsequently sank from the rough sea and strong winds, before the Thai navy tried to pull it ashore, authorities said.
Officials added that they are now working to stop an oil spill about a kilometer wide that has leaked from it which could spread to nearby tourist islands.
Some marine signs have been placed at the sinking site of the boat and fishermen have been asked to be careful with their tools.
A notice has been issued to the shipowners to report for the rescue of the ship, within 15 days.
Local naval captain Itthipat Gavinfuengfukul said shipowners must pay to take the wreck.
