A fourth Russian general has been killed in Ukraine, a clear sign that Moscow’s military leaders are being forced to head to the front, the BBC reports.
Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, claims that during fierce fighting on the outskirts of the southeastern city of Mariupol, his country’s forces killed Russian Major General Oleg Mityaev. Gerashchenko writes that Mityaev, who had also fought in Syria, was the leader of the 150th Motorized Division, and posted a photo of him claiming to be the dead Russian officer.
President Volodymyr Zelensky also reported the death of another Moscow general in his latest video recording, but did not mention his name. Russia is believed to have about 20 major generals leading the invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian military claims that three other Moscow military leaders were killed on Russian soil: Major General Andrei Kolesnikov, Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, and Andrei Sukhovetsky.
Already in the third week of the occupation, the advance of Russian troops seems to have stalled between logistical problems and a lack of organization, a consequence of the fact that the resistance of the Ukrainians turned out to be much stronger than Moscow expected.
