The owners’ desire for a pyrotechnic spectacle turned into a tragedy for the customers of a very popular nightclub in Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde.
The club was engulfed in flames, killing 16 people.
The fire initially engulfed the large club hall located in a fairly good area of the city, home of foreign embassies and diplomatic residences. Authorities say the blaze spread until it reached the place where the gas cylinders used for cooking were kept.
“We are still investigating for the full disclosure of the identity and nationality of all the dead and injured,” said government spokesman Rene Emmanuel Sadi. A statement from the local communications ministry said the fire had initially consumed the roof of the building, followed by two powerful explosions, which caused panic among the people, pushing and a messy escape.
