The northern city of Chernihiv on Friday had the first quiet night since the Russian occupation on February 24, the city’s deputy mayor, Oleksandr Lomako, told the BBC.
He said that “thanks to the great efforts of the Ukrainian army, Russian troops withdrew from most of the villages around Chernihiv.”
After weeks of Russian shelling and airstrikes, Lomako said there was extensive damage to Chernihiv infrastructure.
Western and Ukrainian analysts believe the Russian withdrawal to the north is a regrouping plan, ahead of a new Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine.
