The first contingent of 150,000 doses of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine arrived in Serbia on Sunday morning.
The vaccine plane, which landed at Belgrade “Nikola Tesla” Airport, was received by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
He stated that the provision of these vaccines was made possible by the trilateral talks between Serbia, Great Britain and India, so the representatives of these countries in Serbia, Sian McLeod and Vijay Kumar, respectively, were seen at the airport.
“Thank you for Serbia’s support and for the opportunity to import from India. “This moment is very important for us,” Vucic said.
The British ambassador, Sian McLeod, has said that she is happy to see the arrival of AstraZeneca vaccines in this country.
“Vaccination of the world means global work. “I expect these vaccines to be available worldwide soon,” she said.
Vijay Kumar from the Indian embassy, said that Serbia is the first country in the region to provide these vaccines produced in India.
“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions that India will make its production capacity available to other countries,” Kumar said.
Vucic also announced that Serbia is expected to provide other vaccines against coronavirus, through the international mechanism COVAX, in late March or early April.
“But before the vaccines come from the COVAX program, we will certainly vaccinate and revaccinate 1.1 or 1.2 million people. “This constitutes 20 percent of the adult population,” he said.
Following Sunday’s delivery, Serbia is considered one of the few countries in the world where its citizens will be able to choose between four different coronavirus vaccines.
This country has so far provided the vaccine of the American company, Pfizer, the Russian one, Sputnik V, the Chinese Sinopharm and now the vaccine of the company AstraZeneca.
The latter was approved by the European Union in late January.
