The first US troops, to reinforce NATO allies in Eastern Europe, arrived on February 5 at a military base in southeastern Poland.
These troops were sent at a time when Russian military aggregation along the border with Ukraine is continuing.
“As we have announced, the first elements of the brigade combat group from the 82nd Division of the United States Air Force have arrived in Poland,” said a Polish military spokesman.
Last week, Washington said it would send nearly 3,000 additional troops to Poland and Romania to protect Eastern Europe from the possible consequences of the crisis in Ukraine.
On February 3, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the deployments would include nearly 2,000 troops that the U.S. would send to Poland and Germany. In addition to these troops, some 1,000 more troops currently stationed in Germany will be sent to Romania.
Nearly 1,7,000 troops, mostly paratroopers from the 82nd Air Force Division, will be deployed from North Carolina to Poland “in the coming days,” US military sources said.
The first American troops arrived in Germany on 4 February.
Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops and heavy military vehicles near Ukraine and in Crimea. The US says Moscow may be preparing for an invasion of Ukraine.
The United States and its European allies have warned Russia that it will face tough economic sanctions if it invades Ukraine. The United States and European countries have also said they will send more weapons to Ukraine in the event of a Russian invasion.
