An accidental fire that burned down a one-story apartment in Memaliaj left four members of the Shehu family homeless.
But the scale of this family’s drama is far greater as all of its members suffer from mental health illnesses. This circumstance apparently became first the cause for the fire and then for the control of the situation.
Neighbors who saw the fire and notified police point to residents’ repeated requests that the Shehu family be relocated to a social center as none of the members is able to take care of themselves or others. According to the neighbors, they suffer from frequent crises and frighten passers-by. With the loss of the head of the family a while ago, this family no longer even has a guardian.
The Shehu family is temporarily sheltered in the premises of the cultural center of the municipality while the employees of the services are cleaning the damages and are trying to make the apartment functional again. All four members have been treated with social support for years but it seems that simply paying a pension is not a solution for them. The last situation that is not surprising to be repeated proved that the family lives abandoned without health treatment and without social dignity.
