An agreed ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to allow civilians to evacuate two southeastern Ukrainian cities has been ‘destroyed’, just hours after it was announced.
The main port city of Mariupol and the smaller town of Volnovakha are under extremely heavy bombardment for several days.
But Saturday started with positive news, with the announcement that civilians would be allowed to leave between 09:00 – 16:00 local time (07:00 – 14:00 GMT).
A ceasefire had to be in place at the same time. But this did not happen, there was no ceasefire from the Russian side who bombed the cities at any moment.
According to the BBC, there are reports of fighting around the city of Orikhiv, which is on its way out of Mariupol.
The BBC then heard from the deputy mayor of Mariupol and a resident of the town that Russian forces were still bombing the area.
The Mariupol city council announced that the evacuation of civilians had been postponed because their safety could no longer be guaranteed.
Russia’s Defense Ministry says the ceasefire was broken when Ukrainian “nationalists” fired on its troops.
