A massive volcanic eruption in Tonga triggered a tsunami and plunged the Pacific islands into ash, cutting off energy and communication with the outside world.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the tsunami caused “considerable damage”:
“Shops along the coast have been damaged and will need considerable cleaning. Nuku’alofa is covered with a thick layer of volcanic dust, but the condition is stable. The main underwater communication cable is damaged. “Telecommunications authorities are working to restore communication.”
Locals say they are heartbroken by what is left behind, while thankfully no casualties are reported.
“This is the boat behind. I sailed for 30 years with him. “It’s heartbreaking to see damaged boats – there are sunken boats all over the port, it’s just unbelievable,” said one resident.
The underwater volcano erupted on Saturday, spewing a plume of ash into the sky and sending strong tremors toward Tonga.
The blast was so loud that it could be heard as far as New Zealand, about 2,383 km from Tonga.
