The severe drought that has plagued parts of the US has shed another light on the dark past of the mafia there.
A giant Las Vegas reservoir is shrinking after decades of extreme drought, and as its water level drops, many past sins are coming to the surface.
Including the bodies of those killed by mafia gangs. A skeleton recently found with a bullet in the head is thought to be that of Johnny Pappas, once a household name in the area’s casinos.
Shortly before he disappeared in August 1976, he had told his wife that he was going to lunch with someone who had expressed interest in buying his boat.
“In Las Vegas, the reputation of mobsters was that when they wanted to get rid of someone, they buried them in the desert? They took them there, killed and buried them. But what hasn’t been talked about much is the disappearance of the bodies by dumping them in Lake Mead. The body they found there inside a barrel had been shot in the head. So he was the victim of a murder that happened in the late 1970s.” said Geoff Schumacher, vice president of the Mob Museum.
“Among the guesses as to who the body belongs to, the most likely candidate seems to be Pappas. He was working for the same mob controlled company that owned the Stardust Hotel and the area on Lake Mead, he also had a boat that he was trying to sell.” Schumacher added further.
For years, law enforcement authorities have speculated that Johny’s disappearance may have been the work of Tony Spilotro, suspected of more than 20 murders.
Spilotro died in 1986 and became almost a legend, as the character Nicky Santoro in Martin Scorsese’s Casino, played by Joe Pesci, was based on his figure.
And as Mead’s reservoir continues to dwindle, the more decades-old secrets he’s expected to uncover.
